General & compliance
Is Heart to Heart a medical or nursing service?
No. We're a private, non-medical in-home care and lifestyle support company. We don't provide medical treatment, and we don't replace a physician or home health agency. What we offer is compassionate, professionally guided support that helps clients live safely and independently at home — with a level of observation and communication most private care companies don't provide.
What's the difference between Heart to Heart and a home health agency?
Home health agencies are typically focused on medical, task-based care delivered by clinical staff. Heart to Heart focuses on the whole person — building relationships and individualized plans around daily living, companionship, and peace of mind, guided by professional healthcare oversight rather than functioning as a medical provider.
What areas do you serve?
We provide care throughout Costa Rica's Central Pacific region, including Garabito, Jacó, Playa Hermosa, Herradura, Punta Leona, Esterillos, Puntarenas, and surrounding communities.
Who typically works with Heart to Heart?
Our clients are often retirees living in Costa Rica, families abroad with aging parents here, individuals recovering after illness or hospitalization, people living with dementia or memory changes, and anyone who wants more support with daily life.
How do you handle privacy and confidentiality?
Families and clients can expect their personal information and circumstances to be treated with discretion and respect at every step, from the initial assessment through ongoing care.
Getting started
How do we get started?
Message us on WhatsApp, call, or email. We'll walk through your family's situation, answer your questions, and arrange a complimentary in-home assessment.
How is a care plan created?
Every relationship starts with a complimentary in-home assessment. We get to know the client's routines, preferences, health goals, and level of independence, then build a care plan around that specific person — never a standard package.
How quickly can care begin?
Timelines depend on your family's needs and the type of support required. In many cases, we can arrange a complimentary in-home assessment within days and begin building a care plan shortly after.
What if my loved one doesn't think they need help?
This is one of the most common concerns families bring to us. Our approach starts with a conversation, not a directive — caregivers build trust gradually, respecting independence rather than overriding it. Many clients who were initially hesitant come to see their caregiver as a trusted companion.
Can care plans change over time?
Yes. Needs change, and so should the plan. We regularly reassess and adjust care as circumstances evolve, especially for clients recovering from illness or navigating memory changes.
Cost & logistics
How much does care cost?
Cost depends on the level of care a client needs. Because every care plan is built around a specific person rather than a fixed package, we walk through exact pricing during your complimentary in-home assessment — so there are no surprises.
Is there a minimum number of hours required?
There's currently no minimum number of hours required to begin care with Heart to Heart.
Is there a contract, or can services be adjusted or paused?
Care begins with an agreement that can be adjusted to include more or less support as needs change — weekly hours aren't locked into a fixed contract. The one exception is distance: if a client's location requires additional travel time, a minimum number of hours may apply.
Do you offer overnight or live-in care?
Yes. Heart to Heart offers overnight coverage, temporary live-in support, and full 24-hour care, depending on what a client's situation calls for. These options are built into an individualized care plan, not treated as a separate add-on.
Do you help with transportation to appointments?
Yes. Reliable transportation is part of our Personalized Daily Living Support, helping clients stay connected, independent, and engaged in their community.
Can you help with light housekeeping and meals?
Yes. Personalized Daily Living Support includes maintaining a comfortable, well-kept home and preparing nutritious meals that fit familiar routines and preferences.
Our care team
What kind of training do your caregivers have?
Our caregivers receive guidance and ongoing support from experienced healthcare professionals, including a Registered Respiratory Therapist trained in advanced emergency response. Caregivers are trained to recognize early warning signs of emergencies such as heart attack, stroke, and choking, and to respond quickly and appropriately. This adds a layer of professional observation and communication — without functioning as medical treatment or physician care.
Do your caregivers speak English?
Yes. Our caregivers are fluent in English and proficient to fluent in Spanish, so clients and families can communicate comfortably, and nothing gets lost between a caregiver, a client, and family members abroad.
How are caregivers matched with clients?
Caregivers are matched based on the client's personality, needs, and preferences, identified during the initial in-home assessment. Because relationships are central to how we care for people, we prioritize consistency — the same caregiver, building the same trust, over time.
Will the same caregiver come every time?
Consistency is central to how we work. Clients build real relationships with caregivers who know them well, rather than rotating through unfamiliar faces.
What if the caregiver isn't the right fit?
Fit matters as much as skill. We always aim to place the right caregiver with the right client, and if something isn't working, we'll find another match. Your family's comfort and trust always come first.
What happens if my regular caregiver is unavailable?
We always aim to place the right caregiver with the right client from the start. If a match isn't working the way it should, we'll find a better fit. Any change is handled thoughtfully and communicated clearly with the family.
What happens in a medical emergency?
Our caregivers are trained to recognize early warning signs of emergencies and to respond quickly and appropriately — including notifying family members and emergency services. This is not medical treatment; it's professional observation and fast, informed communication when it matters most.
Specific situations
Do you provide care for people with dementia or Alzheimer's?
Yes. Our Memory & Cognitive Support services provide patient, consistent care for clients living with dementia, Alzheimer's, or other memory changes, delivered by caregivers trained to respond with calm and consistency.
Can you help right after a hospital stay?
Yes. Our Recovery & Transitional Support is designed exactly for this — short-term, attentive support that helps clients heal safely at home after a hospital stay, illness, or diagnosis such as stroke or Parkinson's.
What if my parent's needs increase over time?
Care plans are reassessed regularly and adjusted as circumstances change, so families never have to wonder whether the current support still fits.
How do you keep family members abroad informed?
Families who live abroad are kept closely informed through regular, honest updates, so they always know how their loved one is doing — even from thousands of miles away.
Can I be involved in my parent's care plan even if I live abroad?
Absolutely. We build a direct line of communication with family members abroad, so you can stay informed and involved in decisions, regardless of distance.
Do you work with hospitals or discharge planners?
Yes. We coordinate closely with families and discharge planners to build safe, well-supported transitions home after a hospital stay, illness, or procedure.
How is Heart to Heart different from hiring an independent caregiver directly?
Independent caregivers often come without formal training, oversight, or accountability. Every Heart to Heart caregiver is guided by ongoing support from experienced healthcare professionals, including a Registered Respiratory Therapist, and works within an individualized care plan that is actively monitored and adjusted — giving families a level of structure, consistency, and professional oversight that informal arrangements typically can't offer.
